Leicester named UK's third most entrepreneurial city after emergence of thousands of new companies.
Leicester has been named the third most entrepreneurial city in the UK – with almost 10,000 new companies set up last year.
The study, conducted by an office letting company, found that Leicester was in the national top three in terms of having the highest ratio between its population and the number of new businesses started in 2017.
When the research was completed in January this year it found that 9,796 new companies were set up in Leicester during the period.
Pitched against the population of Leicester, the city came out with a 2% entrepreneurial index.
And city Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said he was not surprised by the findings.
“We have a long history of new businesses going on to be national and international leaders,” he added.
“Leicester has a lot of very ambitious and skilled people who make these businesses a success.
“And in recent years, our two universities have seen huge development and their graduates bring other new ideas and businesses to the city.”
The challenge of retaining and nurturing the next generation of talent in Leicestershire will be discussed by an expert panel at LBV’s ‘Retaining and Nurturing Graduate Talent’ event at The Innovation Centre, De Montfort University on 14 September 2018. Book tickets here.
Birmingham came out on top in the study with a 3% entrepreneurial index and 21,783 new business ventures created.
London gained the same index as Leicester, but was listed second on the leader board because 145,993 new businesses were set up.
